Heywoods Beach

Wide, calm north-west beach near Speightstown, with reef pools for children and easy snorkelling

One of the widest beaches on the island, Heywoods runs along the St Peter coast just north of Speightstown, up towards the Port St Charles marina. The sand is golden, the Caribbean is calm, and there are no strong currents or big waves. A reef sits very close to shore, forming shallow rock pools that are ideal for young children to splash in.

That near-shore reef also makes for easy snorkelling, with tropical fish in clear water, and catamaran trips along this coast stop nearby for turtle swims and snorkelling. Jet ski and paddleboard operators work the beach. There's a public access road with parking, but bring your own shade and drinks unless you've checked what's open nearby. Speightstown, with its shops and places to eat, is a few minutes to the south.
