Silver Sands Beach

Barbados's best-known kite-surf and windsurf beach: white sand, strong trade winds, sport to watch.

Near the island's southern tip, close to South Point Lighthouse, Silver Sands is about a quarter of a mile of fine white sand backed by low dunes and sea grape. The trade winds blow hard here, and with the reef offshore that makes it one of the Caribbean's recognised spots for kite-surfing and windsurfing. A water-sports shop on the beach rents kit and gives lessons, but the conditions suit experienced riders more than beginners.

For ordinary swimming the sea is often rough, with waves, undertow and currents that are worst getting in and out, and there is no lifeguard. The winds are most reliable in the winter months. Showers, toilets, shaded picnic tables and a children's playground sit near the beach. Manchineel grows among the trees behind the sand, so don't shelter under them. Oistins fish fry is a short drive away.
