Long Bay Beach

A long, empty sweep of white sand near the airport for walks, beachcombing and kite-surf watching.

Better known locally as Long Beach, this is one of the longest stretches of sand on Barbados, running along the south-east corner of Christ Church just south of the airport. White powdery sand, cliffs and palms frame it, and there are no bars, shops or chair hire, so it is usually very quiet. Steps lead down from the clifftop, so it suits people who are steady on their feet.

The sea here is not like the calm west coast: waves are big and the currents and undertow are unpredictable, and there is no lifeguard. Paddle rather than swim, and go with company. The steady breeze makes it a spot for surfers and kite-surfers, and the tideline is good for shells, pebbles and coral. Bring water and snacks; the nearest food is towards Oistins and St Lawrence Gap.
