Maxwell Beach

Wide, breezy south-coast beach for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with a gentler eastern end for families

Maxwell sits between Oistins and St. Lawrence Gap: a long ribbon of white coral sand that coastal restoration work has turned into one of the widest beaches on the island. Before that, high tide came almost up to the road. The sea here has more life than on the west coast, with steady waves that suit windsurfing, Hobie Cat sailing and boogie boarding.

The north-east trade winds make Maxwell one of the island's established windsurf and kite spots. The reef throws up bump-and-jump chop rather than big breaking waves, so it suits intermediate riders, and it is right beside the coast road. For a gentler swim with children, head for the eastern end.
