Pier Head Beach

Calm swimming at the edge of Bridgetown, steps from the Careenage, Parliament and lunch in town.

Pier Head Beach is at the northern end of Brownes Beach on Bay Street, right in the centre of Bridgetown. The sand is wide and soft, and the Carlisle Bay water is warm and usually calm, good for a swim or a float. It's at one end of one of the longest unbroken beaches on the island: you can walk south along the shore as far as the Barbados Yacht Club.

It's the easiest beach for a town day: the Careenage, Parliament Buildings, National Heroes Square and the city's restaurants and snack shops are all on foot, and the cruise port is about a 20-minute walk. Early risers may see racehorses being taken into the sea along the bay. The waterfront behind the beach is being redeveloped as The Pierhead, with homes, restaurants and a beach club planned, so expect building work for some time.
