Walkers Beach

Wild, empty east-coast sand for long walks and beachcombing, not for swimming

Walkers Beach

Walkers Beach is a long, open stretch of white sand on the north-east coast, below the green hills of the Scotland District. It runs into Lakes Beach to the south and Morgan Lewis Beach to the north, so you can walk for miles. Behind it is Walkers Reserve, a former sand quarry that has been turned into a nature reserve with dunes, ponds and planted forest. The reserve runs guided and self-guided walks and birdwatching, and its institute has been replanting sea grape to restore the dunes.

There are no facilities and no lifeguard. The Atlantic here brings the island's biggest waves, strongest currents and worst rip tides, and warning signs line this stretch of coast. Stay out of the open sea. At low tide, some sheltered rock pools are safe for a dip. Bring water and sun protection, because there is little shade.
