Ginger Bay (Beachy Head)

Secluded pink-sand cove next to Crane Beach, with fossil caves in the cliffs; best for walks, not swimming

Ginger Bay (Beachy Head)
Rough water(usually rough, with strong waves and currents)

Ginger Bay sits immediately north-east of Crane Beach, a small cove of soft, pink-tinged sand between towering limestone cliffs. The caves at the back of the beach have fossils set into their walls. It gets far fewer people than Crane next door. There is a long staircase down, and at low tide you can also walk round the rocks from Crane. Keep going along the shore and you reach Beachy Head, the next cove along. A hotel once stood on the clifftop, with a staircase that led down through a cave to the sand.

The Atlantic here has big waves, strong currents and undertow, and there is no lifeguard, so treat it as a place to sunbathe, explore the caves and picnic rather than swim. Only confident swimmers should try boogie boarding, and never alone. There are no toilets, showers or food, so bring water and shade. The breeze hides how strong the sun is.

Best for

  • Cave exploring
  • Secluded sunbathing
  • Picnics
  • Walk from Crane Beach
