Bottom Bay
Palm-backed cove under coral cliffs in St. Philip, for photos, picnics and whale-watching from above

Bottom Bay is a cove on the south-east coast in St. Philip, ringed by coral cliffs with a cave cut into their base, coconut palms on soft pale sand and bright turquoise water. You park on the clifftop and climb down a flight of steps, so you need to be reasonably steady on your feet. There are no toilets, shops or food, though chairs and umbrellas are sometimes for hire at weekends. On weekdays it is often almost empty.
This is the Atlantic: the waves are strong, the current and undertow are unpredictable and there is no lifeguard, so swimming is not recommended. Surfers like the swell, but there are jagged rocks. From the clifftop, watch the water for turtles and sometimes whales. Sam Lord's Castle and the Harrismith ruins are nearby, and Palmetto Bay is the next cove north.
