River Bay

North-coast picnic spot where a stream meets the sea, with shaded benches and wild surf views

On the north coast of St Lucy, River Bay takes its name from the small freshwater stream that runs down to the sea here. Picnic benches sit in the shade of the trees, and there are toilets, changing rooms and showers, but nothing to buy, so bring food and drinks. Bajan families fill it at weekends and on public holidays; on weekdays it's quiet and often close to empty.

Paddling and sea bathing in the sheltered part of the bay are popular at low tide, but this is the exposed north coast: rough seas, big waves and strong currents lie further out, so stay close to shore, don't swim alone and ask locals about the day's conditions. Climb onto the cliffs for the view along the coast, where the waves throw spray high off the rocks; whales are occasionally seen offshore. It's an easy pairing with the Animal Flower Cave.
