About

About this villa

Tenby stands on the East Coast of Barbados, in Bathsheba, St. Joseph, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and a quiet gully and river running along the other. The 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom house began life as a 19th-century guesthouse, part of the old Edgewater Hotel, and the recent rebuild has kept the original coral stone walls on the ground floor and the timber staircase, while adding a more contemporary layer on top. All four bedrooms sit on the upper floor, each opening onto its own balcony with views out over the Atlantic and the rugged coastline below. Inside, the rooms are kept deliberately simple, with clean lines, natural tones and custom art rather than heavy furnishing, so that the eye is drawn out to the sea and gardens rather than held by the decor. The coral stone and timber from the original building remain visible throughout the interior, tying the new work back to the house's history. Outside, the grounds run to 4 acres and are arranged into four separate areas for different kinds of time outdoors: a south garden with its own jacuzzi, a pool area set along the riverfront, a space for games of pool, and gardens planted with palms. There is room here for a family or group to spread out, with enough space and privacy that everyone is not sitting on top of each other, which makes the house suited to family holidays as well as gatherings and events. The design and renovation drew on the architecture of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the period associated with the 'villain's lair' look of early James Bond films, and this shows in the symmetry and the generous open internal spaces throughout the house. Alongside this, the rebuild included solar panels and water management systems, so the sustainability of the property was considered as part of the design rather than added afterwards. Set back in its own grounds, the house is private, with the sound of the sea and the river rather than traffic or neighbours. The East Coast position puts Tenby above what is considered some of the best surfing in the Caribbean, including the Soup Bowl break, which can be seen from the property itself. Coastal hiking, horseback riding and deep-sea fishing can all be arranged nearby, and the West Coast of the island is about a 30-minute drive away for those who want calmer water. Closer to home, the sea has carved out rock pools in the reef below the house, good for soaking rather than swimming laps. For anyone who wants a Barbados holiday built around privacy, long walks on quieter beaches and genuine adventure rather than a standard resort stay, Tenby offers an alternative: a converted 19th-century guesthouse on 4 acres of East Coast ground, with surf, hiking and fishing all within reach, and the comforts of a modern, well-equipped house to come back to.
